14 ἀγχίλωψ
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `swelling which obstructs the lacrymal duct' (Gal. 19, 438).Other forms: Synonym αἰγίλωψ (Cels.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Galen analyses as ἄγχι and ὤψ. Strömberg Wortstudien 95f. agrees and explains the - λ- from the synonym αἰγίλωψ (perhaps - λωψ as a whole comes from there). The first member rather from ἄγχω. Not very convincing. - The synonym proves Pre-Greek origin: α\/αι, prenasalization and γ\/χ. Influence of ἄγχι\/ ἄγχω on αἰγίλωψ is improbable. Note that αι before NC is not tolerated in Greek; perhaps the first i derives from a palatalized g'. The analysis will be * a(n)g'-il-ōp-.Page in Frisk: 1,17Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἀγχίλωψ

15 ἀπήνη
Grammatical information: f.Other forms: πήνα· ἀπήνη H.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Unknown. The first question is the relation with πήνα ἀπήνη H.; apocopated acc. to Strömberg Wortstudien 45; thus Fur. 374: the analysis must be ἀπ-ηνη; but rejected by Winter Prothet. Vokal 13 (if the ἀ- is a proth. vowel, the word would be a substr. word). Then there is the synonym καπᾱ́νᾱ (Xenarch. 11, Thess.), s. Güntert Reimwortbildungen 152; the agreement is remarkable, the word is hardly IE. Fur. 224 n. 96 compares γάπος ὄχημα. Τυρρηνοί H. He also adduces (285) λαμπήνη id. (with λαπίνη, which shows prenasalization; on λ\/zero see Fur. 392). Further one has compared ἀμανάν ἅμαξαν H. There is also Myc. apenewo, which would be drawing animals; but ἀπήνη will have -ᾱνᾱ. Bănăt̨eanu REIE 3, 141 thought the word is Anatolian (which amounts to saying that it is a substr. word), which DELG considers possible (but not because ἄμαξα is IE, q.v.!); Szemerényi, JHS 94 (1974) 149f. thought it could be Semitic. - The comparison with καπάνα is the most convincing and shows foreign (substr.) origin (κ-\/zero Fur. 391f.).Page in Frisk: 1,121Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἀπήνη

Grammatical information: acc. pl.Meaning: of πίσεα, perh.`marsh-lands, swamp lands' A. R. 1, 1266.Other forms: A. R. 1, 1266Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: The analysis in ἕλος `swamp' and a root noun *σπίς (*ἑλε[σ]-σπίδ-), which would be cognate with σπίδιος, ἀσπιδής and even with ἀσπίς (s. vv.), is morphologically far from convincing. Bechtel Lex. s. ἀσπίς, Schwyzer 507, W.-Hofmann s. spatium. - Unclear remains the connection with the glosse λέσπιν μεγάλην, ὑδρηλήν. 17 πλάταξ
πλάταξ, - ακοςGrammatical information: m.Derivatives: πλατάκιον n. `id.' (pap. II--IIIp).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: After Ath. " ἀπὸ τοῦ περιέχοντος", d.h. after the exceeding greatness, so from πλατύς, what may be possible (s. bel). Not with Strömberg Fischnamen 75 because of the sound it makes to πλαταγέω `clap', as this does not fit with the cracking sound of the κορακῖνος (on this Strömberg 70 f.). -- Besides πλατίστακος (- κός) m., after Dorio ap. Ath. 3, 118c the greatest kind of the fish called μύλλος; after Parmeno ibd. 7, 308 f. however synonymous with σαπερδης and with κορακῖνος; metaph. = τὸ γυναικεῖον αἰδοῖον (H., Phot.). -- Seemingly from *πλάτιστος popularly enlarged (cf. Strömberg Fischnamen 31 f. with unconvincing analysis); not really convincing. -- The word will be Pre-Greek (- ακ- is the most frequent Pre-Greek suffix).Page in Frisk: 2,553Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πλάταξ

18 πνέω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `to blow, to breathe, to respire, to smell'.Other forms: ep. πνείω (metr. length.), aor. πνεῦσαι (Il.), ipv. ἄμπνυε, midd. -ῡτο, -ύ̄( ν)θη (Hom.), fut. πνεύ-σομαι (IA.). - σοῦμαι (Ar., Arist.), - σω (hell.), perf. πέπνευκα (Att.), pass. πνευσ-θῆναι (Thphr.), - θήσομαι (Aret.).Derivatives: 1. πνοή, Dor. πνο(ι)ά, ep. πνοιή (- οι- metr. condit. after πνείω, Risch 119; on other explanations, which are not to be preferred, Scheller Oxytonierung 83 n. 2 w. lit.) f. `wind, breeze, breath' (Il.); ἀνα-, δια-, ἐκ-πνέω etc. etc.; very often as 2. member, e.g. ἡδύ- ( ἁδύ-)πνοος, - πνους `with a pleasant wind, breath' (Pi., S., E.), ἐπί-πνοος, - πνους `inspired' with ἐπίπνο-ια f. `inspiration' (A., Pl.); - πνοια also beside - πνοή in ἀνά-, ἀπό-, διά- πνέω a.o.; here ἀναπνο-ϊκος `concerning breathing' (Ptol.). 2. πνεῦμα ( ἄμ-, πρόσ- πνέω) n. `wind, breeze, breath, ghost' (Pi., IA.) with πνευμά-τιον (hell.), - τικός `concerning the wind etc.' (Arist.; on the further life (Nachleben) in the westeur. languages. Chantraine Studii clasice 2, 70f.), - τιος `bringing wind' (Arat.), - τώδης `wind-, breathlike of nature, windy' (Hp., Arist.), - τίας m. `asthmatic' (Hp.) with - τιάω `to gasp' (sch.); - τόω, - τόομαι `to blow up, to (cause to) vaporize' (Anaxipp., Arist.) with - τωσις, - τωτικός; - τίζω ( ἀπο-) `to fan by blowing' (Antig., H.) with - τισμός. 3. πνεῦσις f. `blowing', more usu. the compp., e.g. ἀνάπνευ-σις `to breathe again, to inhale, respite' (Il.). 4. With second. σ and τ-suffix as in ἄ-πνευσ-τος, - τί, - τία: πνευσ-τικός `belonging to breathing' (Gal.), more usu. ἀνα-πνέω (Arist.) a.o.; - τιάω `to gasp' (Hp., Arist.). 5. εἴσπν-ηλος, - ήλας `loving, lover' (Call., Theoc., EM), from εἰσ-πνέω `to inspire (love)' with analog. - ηλος; cf. Chantraine Form. 242.Etymology: The regular structure of the above forms is clearly the result of a generalising development, which will also have had zero grade formations as πνεῦσις, ἄπνευστος. Outside the general pattern there are only the isolated ep. forms ἄμ-πνυ-ε etc. `take breath' = `recover from', which may provide a bridge to the semantically slightly deviating but certainly belonging here πέ-πνυ-μαι, - μένος, `mentally active, animated, be sedate'; cf. Ruijgh L'élém. ach. 134 f. Not here prob. πινυ-τή, πινυτός a. cognates, which have only been connected on difficult assumptions; s.v. In any case ἄμπνυε, πέπνυ-μαι are not with Schulze Q. 322 ff. to be separated from πνέω. -- From other languages only some Germ. formations can be compared: OWNo. fnýsa `sniff', OE fnēosan `sneeze', which like πνευ- may contain an IE eu-diphthong; beside them there are however several variants, e.g. OWNo. fnasa, OHG fnehan, which show the unstable character of these orig. onomatop. words. Uncertain is the connection of Skt. abhi-knū́yate `be moist, sound, stink' (Dhātup., Lex.) with dissim. from * abhi-pn- (Mayrhofer s. knū́yate). -- The further analysis of πνέ(Ϝ)-ω in * p-ne-u-mi with nasal infix to the root pu- (assumption by Schwyzer 696 α after Pedersen IF 2, 314) is in the case of a word of this meaning hardly convincing. Further forms w. lit. in WP. 2, 85, Pok. 838f. Here also ποιπνύω; cf. also πνί̄γω.Page in Frisk: 2,566-567Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πνέω

Il.; cf. Kretschmer Glotta 27, 249 a. 278 w. lit., also Yorke Class Quart. 30, 151 f.); opposite ἄ-πτερος (Od.), a.o. of μῦθος (as opposite of ἔπεα πτερόεντα; diff., improbable, Hainsworth Glotta 38, 263ff.); 2. πτερω-τός `id.' (IA.), - τικός `belonging to plumage' (Vp); 3. - μα n. `plumage' (A. fr., Pl. Phdr. a.o.; rather enlarged from πτερόν than from πτερόομαι); 4. πτερό-της f. `winged condition' (Arist.); 5. πτέρ-ων m. n. of an unknown bird ( Com. Adesp.), - νις m. n. of a kind of hawk (Arist.); 6. πτερ-όομαι, - όω, also m. ἐκ-συν-, `to get wings, to become fledged' resp. `to feather, to wing' (IA.) with - ωσις f. `feathering, plumage' (Ar., Arist. etc.). -- Beside it πτέρυξ, -ῠγος f. `wing', like πτερόν often metaph. (Il.). Often as 2. member, e.g. τανύ-πτερυξ (Il.), also πτερόν - πτέρυγ-ος (Simon.) `spreading the wings'; extensively Sommer Nominalkomp. 70f. (cf. on τανύω). -- From πτέρυξ 1. dimin. πτερύγ-ιον n. des. of several winglike objects (Hp., Arist.); 2. - ώδης `wing-like' (Hp., Thphr.); 3. - ωτός `provided with wings' (Arist.); 4. - ωμα n. `poultry etc.' (late); 5. πτερυγ-ίζω, also w. ἀνα- a.o., `to move the wings' (Ar.); - όομαι, - όω meaning unclear (Lesb. lyr. resp. medic.), ἀπο- πτερόν `to lose the wings' (Vett. Val.); πτερ-ύσσω, also w. δια- a.o., `to flap with the wings' (Archil.[?], hell.), perh. from πτερόν; cf. Schwyzer 725 w. lit.Etymology: Beside πτερ-όν stand on the one hand Arm. t`er `side', with lengthened vowel t`i̇r `flight', t`r̄-čim, aor. t`r̄-eay `fly', on the other Skt. pátr-am n. `wing, feather', Lat. acci-piter, - tr-is `hawk', Germ., e.g. OHG fedara, OWNo. fjǫðr f. ' feather', all going back on IE * pter- resp. * petr- (the last also in ὑποπετριδίων ὀνείρων `winged dreams' [Alcm. 23, 49; cf. Kock ad loc.]?). The r-stem is still found in Hitt. patt-ar ( pitt-ar?) n., to which with heteroclit. gen. pl. - an-aš; a continuation of the alternating n-stem a.o. in Lat. penna f. `feather, wing' from * pet-n-ā. At the basis is the verb for `fly' in πέτομαι, πτέ-σθαι, s. v. -- A disyllabic form is seen in Skt. patar-á- `flying', beside which patár-u- `id.', which reminds of the u-stem in πτέρ-υ-ξ(?). As for -( υ)γ- no convincing example inside Greek can be found ( ὄρτυξ and other birdnames are too far off), several connections have been suggested: Skt. pataṅ-g-á- `flying' (for patan- cf. petn- above; on g s. ἀστράγαλος [but this is Pre-Greek]), Av. fra-ptǝrǝǰāt- `bird' (analysis uncertain: from * ptǝrǝ-g- `wing'?), Lat. protervus `turbulent' (from *pro-pterg-u̯os?), OLFr. fetheracco gen. pl. `alarum'. -- Controversial is the connection with Slav. (OCS, Russ. etc.) peró n. `feather', which cannot be directly equated with πτερόν and perh. rather belongs to Skt. parṇám n. `wing, feather, leaf' etc. After Petersson KZ 47, 272 πτερόν would be a cross of *περόν (= Slav. peró) and πτέρυξ. Here further Toch. B parwa pl. `feathers'; cf. v. Windekens Orbis 11, 194. -- Further details w. rich lit. in WP. 2, 20f., Pok. 826, W.-Hofmann s. accipiter, penna, prōtervus, Mayrhofer s. pataráḥ, pátram, parṇám, Vasmer s. peró; also Specht 216f.
